What should happen in my story?

Go with your first suggestion, it sounds like you put a lot more thought into it and it can add a twist to your story. If he's going to have a drinking problem you might want to leave subtle hints to foreshadow it without being obvious but without it coming completely out of the blue when you do reveal it to the reader. I hope that makes sense. You don't want to make him out to be super perfect so that when it turns out that he has a drinking problem the reader isn't going 'What the heck?! That makes no sense!' but still kind of surprise them too and then the hints you left early in the story suddenly come together.
