What is a word for "in need of approval"?

I'm trying to describe a state of mind (not a psychological disorder, just a personality flaw). I need a word (preferably three or four syllables) that means in need of approval, in a mildly insecure way. Like you're hanging on someone else's words hoping they'll compliment you, because if they don't you'll feel dejected.
