Why do some women habitually apply their makeup?

Why do women wear makeup at all? I'm a woman and I wear no makeup. It's a task that, judging from what I've seen my mom, sister, and the girls in my dorm do, is a pain in the ***. Why add another thing to your daily routine when you could instead sleep in for ten or so more minutes? I'll never understand it.
